History
This work is a fascinating glimpse into life behind the scenes at the Paris Opera: in this intimate scene, young ballerinas in snow-white tutus practise under the stern gaze of the ballet master, probably Jules Perrot, a famous choreographer of the time. The composition is dynamic: some girls stretch, others rest, creating an atmosphere of anticipation and movement. The soft light caresses the bodies and clothes, while the pastel tones and quick brushstrokes convey lightness and spontaneity. Degas was fascinated by the world of dance, studying the dancers' movements almost like a photographer; the scene seems caught in passing, with an unusual framing and perspective cuts reminiscent of Japanese prints. The work poetically captures the rigour and grace of ballet, transforming an everyday moment into timeless art.
