History
Lorenzo Gerini, an artist of Tuscan origin, is known for his style characterised by a strong expressiveness and a dramatic use of light and colour. In this painting, the Madonna is depicted in a moment of intimacy with the Child Jesus, who lies in her arms. The composition is typical of the Baroque period, with particular attention to the gestures and emotion of the characters. The faces of the protagonists express sweetness and devotion, while the warm, vibrant colours lend vitality to the scene. The use of ornamental elements and the richness of details, such as draperies and accessories, are indicative of Gerini's ability to create an engaging and evocative atmosphere. Moreover, the work reflects the religious context of the time, in which the figure of the Madonna assumed a central role in popular spirituality. This ‘Madonna and Child’ is appreciated not only for its aesthetic beauty, but also for the artist's ability to evoke deep feelings through the depiction of sacred subjects.
