History
Still Life with Fruit by Johann Wilhelm Preyer is a work dating back to the 19th century, painted by one of Germany's finest artists specialising in this genre. Preyer is known for his incredible detail and the precision with which he renders objects, characteristics that are masterfully reflected in this work. The composition presents an assortment of carefully arranged fruits: grapes, peaches, apples, plums and berries, placed on a marble table or on a light surface that brings out their freshness and bright colours. Each fruit is painted with extreme attention to detail, from the velvety texture of peaches to the shine of grape skins and the translucent glow of blueberries. Light effects play a key role, illuminating and shaping each element to give the impression of three-dimensionality and verisimilitude. The depiction exalts the fruits in their perfection, conveying a sense of abundance and natural lust, elements typical of Preyer's naturalist romanticism.
