History
Giovanna Garzoni is one of the most significant Italian painters of the Baroque period, recognised in particular for her still lifes. The painting ‘Plums’ is a representative work of the still life genre, characterised by a refined composition and extraordinary attention to detail. In the painting, the plums are carefully arranged on a plate, highlighting their sinuous shapes. The light strikes the fruit, creating luminous reflections and soft shadows that enhance their texture and realism. Garzoni uses a meticulous painting technique, highlighting the freshness of the objects depicted. The composition is balanced, with a visual harmony that guides the viewer's eye through the scene. Next to the plums, one can observe natural elements such as leaves or flowers, which further enrich the representation and add depth to the work. This still life is not only an aesthetic expression, but also a reflection of the artistic sensibility of the 17th century, in which the theme of the transience of life and ephemeral beauty was of great relevance. Plums, with their sweetness and fragility, can be interpreted as symbols of life and pleasure, inviting contemplation and reflection. The work realised by the Bottega Tifernate was inspired by the original and differs from it in some details.
